Title of Major Assignment One: Financial Communication
My topic of what I am researching is how a finance professional (e.g. personal financial advisor, stock broker, accountant), effectively communicates to their clients and the various communication styles that play into this task. There are many factors that play into how this communication takes place, each client is different and requires different needs or accommodations to be met. In my preliminary analysis, I was planning on giving background information on the many different fields of finance and the importance of effective communication between client and advisor. Since the majority of my classmates seem to study in fields other than business I felt that this background would shape their perspective on this topic to parallel my own. After providing background information I am planning to dive into how rhetorical techniques are used in finance. Here, I will utilize the responses from my interviews to reveal how one has to alter their communication techniques and rhetorical approach to reach and consult with an audience that, in most cases, have no understanding on how to manage their money. I initially wanted to only provide the many rhetorical approaches finance professionals use; however, now I will work to compare and contrast these rhetorical approaches to see which ones were the most effective communication. Since I am working with a topic that is not directly correlated with “sciences” I have ran into troubles of researching information that relates to communication techniques and not just information on what to do with your money to maximize a portfolio return (the usual perception of finance). I hope the following questions will help myself develop an effective analysis:

You present a very interesting topic here and I'm truly interested to see how your complete analysis will turn out, as this was only a draft yet it contains a surplus of rich information. In your second paragraph, you go into discussing what you intend to talk about throughout your analysis with is smart, but I have a suggestion/ answer to your first question. I believe you should include visuals in your analysis, as this would help various audiences outside of the discourse community of business understand/interpret the information you are presenting. With visuals, your ability to persuade your audience will strengthen as you have statistical/factual information to back up your argument.

Luke, I know you are still working on gathering all of the necessary information so I will focus on the details you mentioned and the questions you presented in order to get a better grasp on what you should be writing about. I am intrigued by the interviews you mentioned in your final paragraph. I feel like when talking about how finance professionals speak with their clients. Finding out first hand how they operate and speak with their clients (whether it be in person or over the phone) seems like it is the best way to get a firm grasp on how these professionals use rhetoric in conversation of a professional manner. Taking a look at notable business magazines is also another great idea. As a fellow business major, these forms of information contain plenty of articles written by business professionals (especially finance professionals) in order to give everyday people and students an insight on what is happening in the financial world. I recommend focusing on the interviews if you can. They will have more specific information that you can analyze rather than just viewing general articles (which are still good, but will not have the same specific reasoning to them). Now, to address your questions, if you believe that visual information will help your audience better understand your analysis, then I believe it is a good idea. Do not throw them in just to take up space. If an article you analyzed has specific financial information, then it could be a good idea to show it graphically in order to help the audience understand it more easily. I’m a firm believer in the organization of IMRAD, and if there is not a more appropriate way to model your project, then I say it would be a good way to structure it. A specific example would be fantastic because you can break it down and give a play by play of how and why their rhetoric changes during the process. You have some good ideas here Luke. I’m excited to see what your next draft will contain.

Hi, your work is easy to follow and simple to understand. This is very impressive and articulate. Communication is very important and several factors come into play in the process. My concern is the importance of proper communication between the client and the advisor. I am glad you explained the uses of the information in a manner that I could easily understand and apply. Moreover, communication is very essential in our daily lives. therefore, it is paramount that we check our modes of communication from day to day. Besides, when communicating, perhaps, we can apply the simple rules of interpersonal communication that are very helpful in remaining polite and relevant.
